JOY THOMAS PRIZE

The Joy Thomas Prize is awarded each year to the top ranked woman in the annual Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for entry into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The overarching goal of the Prize is to inspire a passion for STEM among school-age females in India, and lead to an organic increase in the representation of women in STEM fields.

The JT Prize winners are a shining example of what is possible with hard work, dedication, and a passion for STEM in the school years. JTF WiS will cheer them along as they make significant achievements in their chosen STEM fields. JTF WiS will encourage and educate them to become mentors for students and other professionals as they grow in their careers. JTF WiS will welcome them into the JTF community and provide lifelong support and guidance from accomplished professionals.

In honoring the life and legacy of IIT Madras Alum and 1979 JEE Rank #1 winner Dr. Joy Aloysius Thomas, the Joy Thomas Prize is grounded in five key principles.

Recognize educational excellence in STEM

Organically demonstrate to both boys and girls the achievement of STEM excellence by the Prize winner with whom they are likely to have an aspirational identification

Leverage accomplishments and presentations by the Prize winners to grow STEM participation among high school and middle school girl students

Provide visibility and name recognition to open unique opportunities for the Prize winners

Encourage the Prize winners to form an influential sisterhood of budding mentors for aspiring women scientists, engineers, and technologists
